Why do we speak?
It’s a great question.
I have no answer, and anyway I like questions more than answers, these days.
But I have some thoughts.
We speak because we want to communicate. We want to share our thoughts and feelings. We want empathy and sympathy. Maybe we simply speak because we want help; we want to know that we are not alone.
I’m very emotional these days, so I think about the emotional aspect of it…
But as a scientist I think that we speak also to develop our intellect. Develop ideas…
But let us forget about science for now.
In Hebrew we have a phrase: A loud silence.
It means that people don’t speak with each other when they actually have a lot to say. There is tension between them and they don’t find the right words to say, or just don’t want to speak. Maybe they are afraid of the results.
On the other hand, our best friends are those with whom we can sit silently for hours and feel relaxed and comfortable. So actually, when someone is close to you, it’s not important if you speak or not, as long as you are together. Some people would say that even together is not important, only the love… (or that “together” doesn’t mean in space, it means in the heart…).
